Fashion is enjoying another Sex and the City moment, Southern style.
Kristin Davis, self-confessed ‘Pradaholic’ and Charlotte York’s alter ego,
cuts her own clothing line–primped as Charlotte ever was, but with
Davis’ brand of comfort sewn in. No matter what the look, the actress
is always comfortable in one thing: her own skin. In our exclusive
interview, Davis dishes about A-lines and A-lists, the surprise impact of
the Sex and the City movie and what makes her feel sexy.
“I was very scared; I really didn’t believe I could wear the
fashion stuff,” says Kristin Davis, recalling her first season’s
wardrobe on the set of Sex and the City. “I would cry and [series Costume
Designer Patricia Field] would be like, ‘We are going to figure it out! We will find what works
for you.’ Everything had the Calvin Klein-type straight silhouette; no hips were allowed. I was just out of luck!”
This admission comes after we had just begun sipping ginger
mint lemonade at Wilshire in Santa Monica, Calif. Davis is so
authentically engaging that it reminds me how easy it was to fall
in love with her SATC character, Charlotte York. She is wearing
a comfy T-shirt baby doll dress and satin ballerina flats; her long,
dark hair is loose and cascades down her shoulders. She makes
everyone around her feel at ease; she is just a warm soul. You
can’t help but feel like one of her friends. “Mmm…the ginger is
very light,” she says. “Gives you a feeling of something special,
doesn’t it?”
Speaking in dulcet tones cultivated by her Southern upbringing,
Davis is excited about her new venture, a clothing line. Her
eyes pop like Charlotte’s do as she describes the line she has put
together for Belk department stores. “I’m really fond of it!” she
says. “There is a lot of A-line because that’s what I like. At some
point they were like, ‘Listen, not everyone likes A-line,’ and I was
like, ‘Oh no!’ But I’m very pleased.”
After seven seasons of delicious SATC episodes and neardaily
wardrobe calls, being costumed by the eccentric and forward-
leaning Field, Davis knows just what she wants to put her
name on. “I wanted it to be classic,” she says. “I don’t want it to
be trend-oriented. I want feminine detail on almost everything.
It doesn’t have to be extreme, like frills obviously, but there is
always something a little bit different [and] girly going on. I
don’t have skinny jeans because I’m not a skinny jean person, you
know? I don’t really think we need to be continuing that trend
with my name on it, right?”
